A Helping Hand on the Fourth Hole

The moment that earned Eugene Garrett Parish a city honor began with a glance across Griffin Golf Course. On a 92-degree afternoon in August, Parish noticed a golfer struggling near the fourth hole and helped him reach the golf shop for water and electrolytes. The golfer later emailed his thanks. At a September 8 meeting, Griffin recognized Parish as its August Strongest Link in the Chain. Golf course superintendent Bayne Mallory nominated him, citing both his timely response and his everyday work as a heavy equipment operator on the course and in city parks. Griffin Golf Course has welcomed players since 1932. Keeping it welcoming takes more than tending its 18 holes. That afternoon, Parish was paying attention to the people on them.

Titans Rally Into the Record Book

Griffin Christian went into halftime Friday trailing Baker County by 10. By the final whistle, the Titans had scored 24 fourth-quarter points and secured a 46–42 road victory, their first football win over a public school. Christian “JoJo” McCoy scored on a reception and a run, with the rushing touchdown providing the winning margin. Conner Lewis caught a touchdown pass and returned an interception for another score. Carter Osteen forced a fumble and recovered one on special teams late in the game. The September 18 win kept Griffin Christian unbeaten at 4–0. After a night that demanded a comeback and a finish under pressure, the Titans return home to face CrossPointe Christian Academy on September 25 at 7:30 p.m. Their next game is close, but this one has already earned a lasting place in the program’s history.

Senior Makers Set the Table for October Fair

The Spalding County Senior Citizens Center will fill with work made by local hands on Friday, October 9. Its semiannual Maker’s Market runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 885 Memorial Drive in Griffin. Visitors can browse ceramics, quilts, jewelry, photography, woodwork, crochet, knit pieces, baked goods and other creations from senior center artists. Bring cash if you plan to shop, since only a few vendors accept cards. The fair offers a glimpse of the creativity encouraged at Fifty Forward throughout the year. The center serves adults 50 and older and includes spaces for art, ceramics and sewing, along with fitness, recreation and nutrition programs. What: Spend the morning fishing at Wyomia Tyus Park with the Fifty Forward program. Participants should bring their fishing poles, bait, and a sack lunch. Admission is free for members and $5 for nonmembers.

Griffin Farmers Market

What: UGA Extension Spalding County hosts its weekly farmers market at the Kiwanis Fairgrounds. Shoppers can browse produce, honey, boiled peanuts, and other vendor offerings. A morning stop for picking up locally available foods and supporting area vendors.

Camelot Theatre Presents “Freaky Friday”

You Are Not Alone: Second Annual Suicide Awareness Jeep Event

What: Jeep Club Against Suicide brings the community together for a day of suicide awareness and connection. Activities include vendors, food trucks, raffles, and Show & Shine awards, with swag bags for the first 150 Jeeps. Cemetery Ramble 2026
When: Saturday, October 3, 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM
What: The Griffin-Spalding Chamber Ambassadors and local volunteers bring Griffin’s past to life during an evening walk through Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitors will hear stories of former residents and see the cemetery’s historic monuments and tombstones. The event is recommended for ages 10 and up. Expect up to two miles of leisurely walking across grass, dirt, and pavement. Tickets are available through the event page.
