Tooties Grooming Boutique Opens in Griffin

A new option for pet owners has opened in Griffin. Tooties Grooming Boutique is now welcoming clients at 349 New Orleans Street, offering an appointment-only grooming experience for local dogs. The business is planning an official grand opening and ribbon cutting with the Griffin-Spalding Chamber of Commerce on Friday, August 21, at 2 p.m. Visitors will be able to tour the boutique, meet the team and celebrate the new location, with refreshments and goodies planned as part of the event. Tooties has been promoting the Griffin shop as a more personalized grooming experience, with no walk-ins and appointments scheduled in advance. The opening adds another locally operated service business to Griffin and gives area pet owners a new option close to home.

Griffin and Spalding Athletes Preview Fall Sports Seasons

Fall sports are getting underway across Griffin-Spalding County Schools, and local athletes had a chance to step in front of the camera ahead of the new season. GSCS Athletics hosted its Fall Sports Media Day on Thursday, August 13, featuring coaches and student-athletes from Griffin High School and Spalding High School. During the event, participants answered questions about their teams and what they expect from the season ahead. The district also made the media day available online so families and fans can hear directly from the athletes and coaches representing both schools. The event comes as fall teams move from preseason preparation into competition and gives the community an early introduction to the players, coaches and programs they will be following over the next several months.

The Local Set to Open in Downtown Griffin

Downtown Griffin is getting another new business this week. The Local in Downtown Griffin is set to hold its soft opening Wednesday, August 19, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The new shop will serve loaded teas, smoothies, protein coffees and shakes, giving downtown workers and visitors another stop for a quick drink or breakfast-style option. The business has spent the past several days counting down to opening day on social media as it puts the finishing touches on the space. The Local joins a growing mix of independent businesses opening and investing in downtown Griffin. Wednesday’s soft opening will give customers their first chance to check out the shop before it settles into regular operations. For anyone who works downtown, there may soon be one more reason to make the morning coffee run on foot.

UGA Griffin Welcome Week
When: Monday, August 17 – Thursday, August 20, various times
What: UGA Griffin is kicking off the fall semester with several days of free food, activities and opportunities to connect around campus. Monday includes Coffee & Chat from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM and a Mini Engagement Fair at 5:30 PM. Tuesday brings a College Survival Toolkit Lunch & Learn from noon to 1:00 PM. On Wednesday, Sip & Play starts at 5:30 PM with grilled cheese, drinks and lawn games, followed Thursday by an Indoor Game Night at 5:30 PM with ice cream and board games.

TUESDAY

Spalding County Sheriff’s Office Prayer Luncheon
When: Tuesday, August 18, 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM
What: The Spalding County Sheriff’s Office hosts its monthly community prayer luncheon at the Kiwanis Fairgrounds. This month’s meal includes BBQ chicken, Brunswick stew, roasted vegetables and potatoes, bread, dessert and tea, with a chef salad option also available. Lunch is $5 per person. An RSVP is required and must be made with Julie Shorb by noon Monday so organizers can prepare enough meals.

What: The Griffin+Spalding Chamber of Commerce is bringing local professionals together for its August Business After Hours. Switzerland Rails & Sails Travel Information Meeting
When: Thursday, August 20, 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM
What: The Griffin+Spalding Chamber of Commerce is holding a free information session for its planned Switzerland Rails & Sails trip scheduled for September 2–12, 2027. Representatives from Mayflower Cruises & Tours will walk through the itinerary, what is included, the reservation process and answer questions. Residents can attend simply to learn more about the trip without committing to travel, although an RSVP is requested.

12th Annual Doc Holliday Festival
When: Saturday, September 12, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM
What: The Doc Holliday Festival returns to Griffin City Park for a free day of barbecue, history and family entertainment. The festival will feature more than 30 professional teams competing in a Georgia Barbecue Association competition, along with a People’s Choice tasting where visitors can sample barbecue and vote for their favorite. Spurred West will perform three reenactments of the famous shootout at the O.K. Corral while sharing the story of Griffin native John Henry “Doc” Holliday. A portion of the event’s proceeds will support the Spalding Collaborative for Families and Children.
